The information shared in this session is intended to 'demystify' the product, provide an overview of product features and reserving considerations, and meet the needs of actuaries focused on annuity product development and reserve valuation.

Although similarities exist in product design between U.S. and Canadian annuities, regulation and taxation are different. This guide also focuses primarily on areas that are specific to the subject of annuities and touches upon related issues such as investments and pensions more lightly.

The article intends to provide an overview on the development of the final regulations and highlight the key updates in final regulations, the transition rules to apply final regulations and some of the relevant issues not addressed in final regulations (e.g. MITT, Rev. Since then, waves of COVID-19 have continued to occur in the U.S. The uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic and the slowing of U.S. general population mortality improvement prior to the pandemic are just a few of the reasons that make developing MI projection scales difficult.
